Vintage 1977-Style Overdrive

In the world of guitar effects, very few pedals can claim a legacy comparable to the legendary Boss OD-1. Introduced in 1977 by Boss, this pedal was one of the very first compact overdrives ever produced and it fundamentally changed the way guitar players approached saturation.

The Over Drive pedal by Colombo Audio Electronics was created with a clear goal: to bring back the sonic character of the earliest production units built between 1977 and 1981, widely considered the most desirable versions among vintage pedal enthusiasts.

This boutique recreation faithfully reproduces the original circuit based on a quad op-amp configuration, a distinctive electronic design found in the very first units and largely responsible for their unique tonal character.

The result is an overdrive that delivers warmth, dynamics, and exceptional musicality, easily integrating into any guitar rig.

The True Analog Overdrive of the ’70s

The original Boss OD-1 was never designed for extreme distortion. Instead, its purpose was to recreate the natural breakup of a tube amplifier pushed to its sweet spot.

The Over Drive pedal follows exactly that philosophy.

Its saturation is smooth and progressive, with a natural compression that enriches the signal while preserving the dynamics of your instrument. This allows your guitar to maintain its full expressive range, responding beautifully to both picking intensity and the guitar’s volume control.

Roll back your guitar’s volume and the tone cleans up instantly. Dig in harder and the pedal delivers a richer, more present overdrive.

This dynamic response makes the pedal especially suitable for styles such as:

• Blues

• Classic Rock

• Fusion

• Hard Rock

• Pop

Faithful to the Earliest Circuit Design

Over the years, the original overdrive circuit went through several revisions. However, the earliest units produced between 1977 and 1981 remain the most sought-after for their open, three-dimensional tone.

The Over Drive pedal from Colombo Audio Electronics is inspired by this specific era, faithfully recreating the early circuit structure built around a quad op-amp design—a key element contributing to the pedal’s remarkable dynamic response.

Every component is carefully selected to preserve:

• The original dynamic response

• Natural analog saturation

• The warm and musical character of the vintage circuit

The result is an overdrive rich in harmonics, always clear and articulate, never artificial.

Perfect as a Boost or Main Overdrive

One of the reasons this type of circuit has remained popular for decades is its incredible versatility.

Over Drive can serve multiple roles within your pedalboard.

With the gain set low and the level increased, it becomes an outstanding boost for tube amplifiers, pushing the tubes into a natural, singing saturation with increased sustain.

With higher gain settings, it delivers a warm, dynamic crunch that works beautifully for rhythm playing or vintage-style lead tones.

Thanks to its tonal character, the pedal also stacks extremely well with other overdrives or distortion pedals, enhancing harmonic complexity without masking the natural voice of your instrument.

Handcrafted Construction

Every Over Drive pedal is hand-built by Colombo Audio Electronics, following the same philosophy that defines all of our products: attention to detail, carefully selected components, and individual testing of each unit.

This approach ensures a pedal that is both reliable and refined in every aspect, designed to accompany guitar players for many years.

Rather than being a simple clone of a historic circuit, it is a boutique reinterpretation that remains faithful to the spirit of the earliest vintage units.

Choose Your Bypass Type

You can choose the bypass configuration that best fits your rig: Original Buffered Bypass or True Bypass.

If you want to preserve the same circuit behavior found in the original ’70s pedal—even when the effect is bypassed—we recommend Original Buffered Bypass.

If you prefer the pedal to be completely removed from your signal chain when it is off, True Bypass is the best option.

Original Buffered Bypass if:

• You want the same circuit philosophy as the 1977 pedal

• You have many true bypass pedals in your chain

• You use vintage or very long instrument cables

True Bypass if:

• You want the pedal completely removed from the signal path when off

• You don’t want any tonal coloration when the pedal is bypassed

• You already have one or more buffers in your signal chain

A Timeless Classic

The Over Drive pedal is a tribute to one of the most influential circuits in the history of guitar effects.

It is the perfect choice for players looking for:

• An authentic vintage overdrive tone

• Exceptional dynamics and musicality

• A natural boost for tube amplifiers

• The unmistakable character of 1970s analog overdrive

A simple concept, executed with care—just like the legendary pedals that inspired it.
